The first trailer for 28 Years Later from director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland has arrived and it’s a bone-chilling look into an apocalyptic future where the undead lurk around every corner. This marks the third movie in the franchise following 2002’s classic horror 28 Days Later and its 2007 sequel, 28 Weeks Later.
The trailer for 28 Years Later offers very little plot but it reminds us that over 10,000 days have passed since the outbreak which plunged the world into darkness. Aaron-Taylor Johnson will play the lead in the movie – his role seems to be a hunter of sorts. The movie also stars Ralph Fiennes, Jodie Comer, Jack O’Connell and Cillian Murphy as Jim, who plays the same character from 28 Days Later.
The plot synopsis and details are being kept tightly under wraps and it’s difficult to really discern a story based on the intentionally vague trailer, which gives us horrifying glimpses of the undead and a sinister atmosphere.
28 Years Later reunites director Danny Boyle with Alex Garland, the writer behind 28 Days Later. He also worked with Boyle on the 2007 sci-fi thriller, Sunshine. Garland has blazed his own trails as a director in Hollywood, directing critically acclaimed movies such as Ex Machina, Annihilation and this year’s Civil War. As a little bonus, Garland also has experience writing video games, notably Enslaved: Odyssey to the West and DmC: Devil May Cry for Ninja Theory.
The plot for 28 Days Later reads, “Four weeks after a mysterious, incurable virus spreads throughout the United Kingdom, a handful of survivors try to find sanctuary.” The sequel, 28 Weeks Later, was co-written and directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo. As the title suggests, it takes place six months after the initial outbreak, following a new group of survivors struggling to contain the plague.
28 Years Later releases in cinemas on 20 June 2025. Watch the trailer below:
