Netflix have announced that they’re working on a BioShock movie with Take-Two Interactive. No details had been revealed other than the announcement, but according to The Hollywood Reporter, the partnership deal had been in the works for almost a year.

Revealed by Netflix Geeked yesterday, the account confirmed that a BioShock movie was planned in partnership with Netflix, which currently has many anime and gaming adaptations in production. Previous attempts to produce a live-action BioShock movie had failed, but it looks like Netflix succeeded in acquiring the rights to develop the adaptation.

Netflix Geeked revealed in a tweet that Take-Two Interactive, 2K and Netflix were collaboratively working on a BioShock movie, stating “Netflix, 2K and Take-Two Interactive are partnering to produce a film adaptation of the renowned video game franchise BioShock.”

Beyond that, little is actually known about the film adaptation. However, many speculate that it will adapt the first game as the tweet was accompanied by a quote from the original game’s antagonist Andrew Ryan, with imagery of Big Daddy and the underwater city of Rapture.

When BioShock first released in 2007, it caught the attention of Hollywood who originally assigned Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski to a movie adaptation. The rights were then passed to 28 Weeks Later director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, though the project was cancelled due to studios unwilling to give the adaptation an R-rating.

As for the gaming series, a new BioShock game is reportedly in development and it’s expected to be revealed sometime in 2022. The rumour is that it will be set in 1960s Antarctica, and might be a PS5 exclusive. As with all rumours, take this with a grain of salt for now.

Netflix haven’t revealed which cast and crew will be working on their BioShock movie adaptation yet or when it will even release, so this might take a while.
