A Minecraft Movie Sequel Being Discussed After $550 Million Box Office Success

A Minecraft Movie is doing very well at the box office, raking in over $550 million worldwide so far in the last ten days. Warner Bros. seems to be pleasantly surprised by the positive turnout too as the studio is now already discussing a sequel to capitalise on its success.

A Minecraft Movie stars Jack Black and Jason Momoa in a loose adaptation of the beloved, best-selling video game from Mojang. As revealed by Box Office Mojo, the movie has crossed $550 million at the worldwide box office, where it also raked in $280 million domestically in the US. On release weekend, A Minecraft Movie quickly soared to pass The Super Mario Bros. Movie with the biggest opening weekend ever for a video game movie.

Per Deadline, a sequel is now being discussed at Warner Bros. Pictures. That’s according to director Jared Hess, who commented on the possibility of a sequel:

“Oh, man. Well, it would be so much fun. We had so much fun making this movie, and it’s such an expansive world in the game, and there were so many things that we didn’t tap into that we wanted to. I would have a blast doing the sequel and it seems like there’s already talk about it happening, so I’m super excited. It’ll be so much fun to go back into the world.”

The plot description for A Minecraft Movie reads:

“Four misfits find themselves struggling with ordinary problems when they are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld, a bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination. To get back home, they’ll have to master this world while embarking on a magical quest with an unexpected, expert craftier. Together, their adventure will challenge all five to be bold and to reconnect with the qualities that make each of them uniquely creative-the very skills they need to thrive back in the real world.”

A Minecraft Movie is now playing in cinemas worldwide. See what else came to South African cinemas this April.
