Asobo Studio’s new stealth-action game A Plague Tale: Requiem has been drawing a lot of attention to itself lately for more reasons than its launch today on consoles and PC. The game’s performance issues are coming to light, with previous reports suggesting that it was aiming for 60FPS. However, now that the game is out in the wild, some early tests reveal that it actually caps out at 30FPS on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, while offering 40FPS if you have a 120hz TV.
Twitter tech channel El Analista De Bits recently ran the numbers to figure out A Plague Tale: Requiem‘s performance limitations on consoles. Basically, the findings revealed that on PS5 and Xbox Series X, the game offers 1440p 30FPS. Xbox Series S, on the other hand, caps out at 1080p 30FPS. All systems will run the game at 40FPS granted you have a TV capable of outputting 120hz.

Recently, Warner Bros. Montreal came under fire when it revealed that Gotham Knights would be capped to 30FPS on consoles as well. The difference between the two games is what’s on screen at any given time. In A Plague Tale: Requiem, there are plenty of sequences featuring thousands (or hundreds of thousands) of rats on screen at once, which easily tanks the framerate.
In our review of A Plague Tale: Requiem, we talked about how the game seemingly floats around the 40FPS mark (reviewed on a 120hz TV and PS5), though attempts to push it further or lower depending on the on-screen activity. In some cases, the framerate dipped to around 20-25FPS with more intense rat sections.
During the review period, Asobo Studio released a patch that reportedly attempted to stabilise the performance issues. Further patchwork post-launch is needed, though, as there have been issues beyond some framerate problems like bugs and glitches. During my playtime, a bug completely removed an NPC from a quest, meaning I had to restart the chapter to respawn them and fix the issue. Bugs like these are still being reported as more players get into the game today.
A Plague Tale: Requiem is now available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC. It’s also available on Xbox Game Pass.
