Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition Being Tested on PlayStation

Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition is reportedly being tested on the PlayStation Network. This follows a previous report from The Verge’s Tom Warren who claimed that Xbox was considering launching the title on PS5 sometime in early 2025. New screenshots have now surfaced showing PlayStation users in an Age of Empires 2 lobby.

As spotted by Reddit user draconis90 on the Age of Empires 2 subreddit, some PlayStation players have uploaded images of their tags appearing in the lobby of Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition. Microsoft hasn’t officially made an announcement regarding the popular strategy game heading to PS5, so it seems like testing it quietly being done with a number of players presumably under NDA.

This is a big deal as the Age of Empires series has never had an official PlayStation release before, at least not since PS2 with Age of Empires 2: The Age of Kings which released in 2001. It also aligns with Microsoft’s plans to push more of its exclusive titles to other platforms and it seems like Age of Empires might be one of the franchises ready to make the leap to PlayStation next.

Five months ago, The Verge’s Tom Warren posted a list of news regarding upcoming games in 2024 and beyond. One of the points mentioned in his notepad was the PS5 port of Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition, which was being considered for PlayStation at the time (alongside Starfield). It’s unclear how much progress Bethesda has made with porting Starfield over to PS5, though the newly leaked images of the PSN lobby suggests that Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition is coming sooner rather than later.

The description for Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition reads:

“Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition celebrates the 20th anniversary of one of the most popular strategy games ever, now with stunning 4K Ultra HD graphics, and a fully remastered soundtrack. Age of Empires II: DE features ‘The Last Khans’ with 3 new campaigns and 4 new Civilizations. Frequent updates include events, additional content, new game modes, and enhanced features with the recent addition of Co-Op mode!”

If you’d like to play the critically acclaimed strategy title, it’s currently available on Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
