April has finally rolled around which means more movies are coming to South African cinemas near you. This month is slightly less eventful than March but nonetheless, cinema-goers can enjoy a wide selection of new and interesting movies ranging from thrillers and action to animation and horror. The biggest releases of the month are the live-action Minecraft and Until Dawn movies based on the popular video games, though there’s more in store for everyone.

A Minecraft Movie (Adventure / PG) – 4 April
Four misfits find themselves struggling with ordinary problems when they are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld: a bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination. To get back home, they’ll have to master this world while embarking on a magical quest with an unexpected, expert crafter, Steve.

A thief breaks into a luxury SUV, only to realize that he has stumbled into a complex and deadly trap set by a mysterious figure.
The Amateur (Action / 16) – 11 April
After his life is turned upside down when his wife is killed in a London terrorist attack, a brilliant but introverted CIA decoder takes matters into his own hands when his supervisors refuse to take action.
Drop (Thriller / 16) – 11 April
Violet, a widowed mother on her first date in years, arrives at an upscale restaurant where she is relieved that her date, Henry, is more charming and handsome than she expected. But their chemistry begins to curdle as Violet begins being irritated and then terrorized by a series of anonymous drops to her phone.
A Kind of Madness (Drama / TBA) – 11 April
A 70-year old man abducts his dementia-suffering wife from her retirement home and goes on the run from both the police and his adult children.
Warfare (Drama / 18) – 11 April
A platoon of American Navy SEALs in the home of an Iraqi family overwatches the movement of US forces through insurgent territory.
The King of Kings (Animation / 7-9 PG) – 18 April
A father tells his son the greatest story ever told, and what begins as a bedtime tale becomes a life-changing journey. Through vivid imagination, the boy walks alongside Jesus, witnessing His miracles, facing His trials, and understanding His ultimate sacrifice. Old Guy (Action / 16) – 18 April

The Accountant 2 (Action / TBA) – 18 April
When an old acquaintance is murdered, Wolff is compelled to solve the case. Realizing more extreme measures are necessary, Wolff recruits his estranged and highly lethal brother, Brax, to help. In partnership with Marybeth Medina, they uncover a deadly conspiracy, becoming targets of a ruthless network of killers who will stop at nothing to keep their secrets buried.
Jungle Beat 2 The Past (Animation / TBA) – 25 April
The animals from the African jungle fall through a time portal that the aliens forgot to close behind them. To return to the future, friends will need the help of dinosaurs. But the ancient lizards have their own problems. After all, their world is about to be invaded by cave aliens armed with clubs.
The Penguin Lessons (Drama / TBA) – 25 April
In 1976, as Argentina descends into violence and chaos, a world-weary English teacher regains his compassion for others thanks to an unlikely friendship with a penguin.
Until Dawn (Horror / TBA) – 25 April
One year after her sister Melanie mysteriously disappeared, Clover and her friends head into the remote valley where she vanished in search of answers.
