In 1992, Alone in the Dark released and became the first 3D survival horror game ever. Alone in the Dark did, in my opinion, shape the survival horror genre as we know it today and therefore, we have some great news to share. THQ Nordic has acquired the rights to both Alone in the Dark and Act of War from Atari.

The new home and publisher for Alone in the Dark going forward, THQ Nordic, announced the news on Twitter, stating that:

We are happy to announce that THQ Nordic has acquired the IPs for “Alone in the Dark”, a Lovecraftian survival horror game series and “Act of War”, a real-time strategy game featuring a story by NYT bestselling author Dale Brown, from Atari.

Although most games in the franchise were pretty good, including the 2008 reboot, the last game fell far short. Alone in the Dark: Illumination was a massive failure as a four-player action game, sitting at a “Mostly Negative” user review rating on Steam. Hopefully, with the rights to the franchise acquired, THQ Nordic can give fans of the original game a new and exciting title. At the very least, a modern remake of the original would be much appreciated.

At the time of writing, THQ Nordic has not shared their plans for the either of the franchises at all. However, it would be very strange to purchase the rights and not do anything about it. Earlier this month, the publisher also acquired the rights for Kingdoms of Amalur, so it seems like the publisher is on quite the shopping spree right now.

Are you a fan of the Alone in the Dark franchise and what would you like to see come out of this acquisition by THQ Nordic? Let us know in the comment section below.
