The Conservatorium Hotel Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

Amsterdam Hotel Not Happy With Modern Warfare 2 Appearance – Could Take Legal Action

The hotel that appeared in the recent Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is not happy about its appearance in the game. The business called the Conservatorium Hotel appears in the game as the Breenbergh Hotel and while it is called something different, it is undeniably the same thing.

To make matters worse, the building isn’t just present in the story campaign but is also a dedicated map in the game’s multiplayer mode. Hotel manager Roy Tomassen told a local media site named de Volksrant that the hotel doesn’t support games that encourage the use of violence. He says that the game in no way reflects the hotel’s core values and they regret the unwanted involvement in the game.

The hotel is reportedly considering the various steps it could take to remove the appearance in the game. It is also suggested that the company hasn’t ruled out legal action yet.

The Conservatorium appears in both the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 single-player campaign and in a dedicated multiplayer map too. Just looking at the images on a Google search will show you how accurate the hotel’s depiction is in the game. The mock hotel, the Breenbergh features the same glass-and-steel design which was originally crafted when the hotel was a bank in the 1800s. The real-life location also features the same finishes.

While this may not seem like a big deal, building styles and architectural design is also copyright protected under the law. Both the American and European constitutions prevent people from copying creations. At the moment it isn’t clear whether or not the hotel will take legal action but if they have grounds to, it might be an option. It all depends on how much of the hotel is protected by the law. If it turns out that Activision has indeed infringed on architectural copyright, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 might be less one map soon.
