The entire workforce of Annapurna Interactive, the publisher behind games like Stray and Neon White, have resigned following a dispute with the group’s owner, Megan Ellison. The staff that walked out of the studio accounts for 25 members including the publisher’s president, Nathan Gray.
As reported by Bloomberg, 25 staff members at Annapurna Interactive, consisting of creative and managerial positions, have resigned from the company after Megan Ellison pulled out of discussions to spin the publisher off into an independent entity. “All 25 members of the Annapurna Interactive team collectively resigned,” said Gray in a statement. “This was one of the hardest decisions we have ever had to make and we did not take this action lightly.”
GamesIndustry.biz later reported that parent company Annapurna has been looking to to closely integrate its gaming division with its films and TV divisions. Ellison responded with a statement on the matter saying:
“Our top priority is continuing to support our developer and publishing partners during this transition. We’re committed to not only our existing slate of games but also expanding our presence in the interactive space as we continue to look for opportunities to take a more integrated approach to linear and interactive storytelling across film and TV, gaming, and theatre.”
Negotiations between Gray and Ellison failed to reach an agreement, leading to Gray and at least two dozen staff members to exit the company. It recently rehired Hector Sanchez from Epic Games, who was one of the original founders of Annapurna Interactive, to lead interactive and new media as president.
Annapurna Interactive is a critically acclaimed publisher known for several award-winning video games. Highlights include Outer Wilds, Stray, Neon White, Cocoon, Lorelei and the Laser Eyes, Twelve Minutes, What Remains of Edith Finch, Ashen and the upcoming Silent Hill: Townfall, which is being developed by No Code with assistance from Konami.
