Cyberpunk Edgerunners Netflix Cyberpunk 2077 Anime

Another Cyberpunk Animated Show is in The Works

CD Projekt Red has confirmed that it’s working on a new animated TV show based on its video game, Cyberpunk 2077. The untitled show will also release on Netflix similar to 2022’s Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, which was crucial in getting more eyes on the video game despite its controversial state at the time. It seems like CD Projekt Red isn’t quite done telling stories in this universe removed from the main plot of the game, though details are being kept under wraps.

Speaking during its latest quarterly earnings call on Tuesday, CD Projekt Red chief financial officer Piotr Nielubowicz confirmed that it’s working on a new Cyberpunk animated TV show, stating, “I’m also very happy to announce that we’re working on another animation project set in the Cyberpunk universe, which will be released on Netflix.” He didn’t share any more details about the show, including which animation studio will handle it.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was animated by Studio Trigger, best known for anime such as Kill la Kill, Kiznaiver and Darling in the Franxx. It was a critical success at launch, going on to win Anime of the Year at the Crunchyroll Awards in 2022. More importantly, it rejuvenated public interest in the Cyberpunk 2077 video game which launched a year prior in a notoriously terrible, broken state – so much so that CD Projekt Red spent the following years overhauling the game’s systems and providing numerous fixes.

Cyberpunk 2077 is much better received today, though there’s no denying that many fans view Edgerunners a bit more fondly. We’re hoping that Studio Trigger returns to animate the new show. Considering the conclusive ending of Edgerunners, it’s highly unlikely that it will be a continuation of that storyline as CD Projekt Red made it clear that it was a one-and-done narrative. There seems to be plenty of stories to tell in Night City after all.
