EA Games has ceased development on BioWare’s “long-term redesign” of Anthem. The developer was currently working on the so-called “reboot” called Anthem NEXT but the company decided to can all future work and development on the title. In short, this means players won’t be receiving any new content for Anthem at all but they can still play the game as the servers will remain online.

In a blog post, BioWare executive producer Christian Dailey said that the decision was not an easy one to make. He also blames COVID-19 for putting the team under pressure throughout 2020.

Dailey also says that the studio will be putting all its efforts into Dragon Age, and Mass Effect as development ramps up for the two upcoming games.

2020 was a year unlike any other however and while we continue to make progress against all our game projects at BioWare, working from home during the pandemic has had an impact on our productivity and not everything we had planned as a studio before COVID-19 can be accomplished without putting undue stress on our teams.

Game development is hard. Decisions like these are not easy. Moving forward, we need to laser focus our efforts as a studio and strengthen the next Dragon Age, and Mass Effect titles while continuing to provide quality updates to Star Wars: The Old Republic.

Daily has also thanked the Anthem community for the passion and creativity they delivered during the release.

A few weeks ago we reported that EA Games was meant to decide the fate of Anthem NEXT. This being after a couple of developers was working on the reboot. The decision would be to either add more resources to the project including money and developers or completely scrap the game. Well, we know what they decided, right?

Anthem launched to some rather mediocre feedback from fans and critics. The game, while offering some superb combat and general gameplay, lacked features, had loads of bugs and felt incomplete and boring after a couple of hours. Maybe this is for the best.
