Anthem development

Anthem Was Considered as a Free-To-Play Game According to BioWare

The Anthem open demo weekend is in full swing and we hope you are having a great time flying around like Iron Man and shooting a whole load of enemies. With less than a month to go before the game makes its debut, more information regarding BioWare’s upcoming shooter is coming to light. This time about an Anthem free to play model.

According to EDGE Magazine, Anthem’s original release plan was to actually see the game release as a free-to-play model. According to the game director, the F2P aspect of the game was discussed very early on in development but it was not a direction that EA or BioWare was moving in.

“If you go free-to-play, you still have to have a profitable business or we can’t continue to do an amazing live service for all our players. So what would you really be trading if you gave the game away for free? There’s all that money you’d have to make to be profitable. And so then you get into the territory of being less player-generous. I think in the triple-A space, people are more comfortable paying the entry fee and then having a great player-generous model with no paid DLC, and optional vanity items that you can earn in-game currency to buy anyway.”

This comes as no surprise really as EA is not the most generous company in the world and by Anthem having an entry price tag, it means that EA can make money off both game sales and the in-game purchases which are already in the game but cosmetic only.

If you ask us, Anthem could have made a great F2P game but we hope its paid model lives up to the expectations of players around the world. Anthem releases on 22 February 2019 for PS4, Xbox One and PC.
