Apple iPhone 16 Event – When and Where to Watch and What to Expect

The Apple September event is just a few hours away. The company is expected to announce the iPhone 16 lineup this evening alongside a new Apple Watch range and more.

Dubbed the “Its Glowtime” event, the stream kicks off at 19:00 tonight South African time. You’ll be able to watch the Apple September event on the Apple website, YouTube channel and on your Apple TV device. I prefer to watch the event on the Apple TV device as it streams in 4K HDR, by the way.

iPhone 16 – What to Expect

The September Apple event is an annual showcase where the company announces the new iPhone hardware. This year’s event will focus heavily on the new Apple Intelligence features coming to the iPhone 16 range. This is a big deal because right now the only iPhone devices capable of Apple Intelligence are the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro.

The entire iPhone 16 lineup is expected to ship with Apple Intelligence support. The phones will also come with beefier internals including faster chips, improved cameras and a slightly larger battery.

The base iPhone 16 is expected to include the iPhone 15 Pro’s A17 Pro processor from last year. As a result, it will support Apple Intelligence. The iPhone 16 Pro models will then get the newer Apple A18 Pro processor. However, it is also rumoured that all iPhone 16 models will get the new A18 chip across the board.

The iPhone 16 is also getting a camera layout refresh with larger lenses placed under one another. It will take the phone design back to the iPhone X layout instead of using the diagonal design we have seen since the iPhone 13. These new cameras come with added support for the iPhone 16 spatial video capture for Apple Vision Pro.

As for the iPhone 16 Pro, the phone is expected to get the same camera system across both the standard and the Pro Max variant. This means the smaller iPhone 16 will include the 5x tetraprism telephoto lens. Apple is also expected to bump up the ultrawide camera on the iPhone 16 Pro to a 48MP sensor. These new camera sensors will take advantage of a dedicated camera button built into the side of the iPhone 16 Pro.

Apple Watch – What to Expect

The Apple Watch Series 10 may have a thinner, more refined design this year. The watch is expected to get a larger display with thinner bezels around the screen. The design change will align the watch more with the Apple Watch Ultra.

Apple is also expected to announce an Apple Watch SE which will feature a plastic shell. The watch will be a cheaper version and the plastic casing makes it more affordable.

What Else?

At the moment we are not sure what else Apple has in store. Rumours claim the company will also debut new AirPods and switch the AirPods Max over to USB-C. The products are the last devices Apple sells with Lightning connectors so the change to USB-C would complete the transition.

We will share all the news as it happens this evening.

iPhone 16 launch event was a bit of a disappointment since other than the new A18 6-core chipset + 48MP camera + wifi 7 and 4k @ 120fps recording (Samsung already had it on S24 Ultra) we did not get anything else… And the whole AI is not even live…And that camera button that is very uncomfortable for portrait shots. One major camera improvement – low light photo performance!

Unless you are upgrading from iPhone 11 or earlier models, it does not make sense to go for 16 pro models this time. Wait for another year.

I get this. I usually get a new iPhone every year and this time I can’t see any reason to move from iPhone 15 Pro Max to iPhone 16 Pro Max. The one feature might have been 4K 120Hz video because my YouTube channel is filmed on my iPhone and it would have been cool but the blurry and noisy video quality put me off.
