Apple Pay Now Available on PS5 Consoles

You’ll now be able to purchase games on your PS5 using Apple Pay. Sony has rolled out the digital payment method on PS5 consoles, giving users the opportunity to ditch their credit/debit card payment method for the Apple-linked one instead.

Apple Pay on the PS5 now gives owners the option to scan a QR code during the checkout process on the PlayStation Store. Using their iPhone, they can then scan the QR code and make use of the Apple Pay system they already have loaded on their device.

Once scanned, the QR code will initiate the same purchase mechanism which you usually get when making on-device Apple Pay transactions. Your iPhone will either scan for Face ID, your fingerprint, or ask for a passcode.

Apple Pay on PS5 is a welcome addition to the console. It means that you can decide whether you want to use the stored payment method on the PlayStation Store or perhaps want to use a different card you might have on Apple Pay. Customers in the US will also get 2% cash back for their Apple Card payments through Apple Pay.

The support comes after Apple introduced third-party QR Apple Pay systems through iOS 18 last year. Up to then, Apple Pay was restricted to certain checkout platforms and, of course, some on-device apps and web browsers. However, in iOS 18, Apple released a new API with third-party support for other browsers and QR scanning. The company is making the payment method available outside of the iOS and macOS ecosystem. This is the first of many we will likely see rolling out in the future.

According to Sony, Apple Pay is available in South Africa. If you don’t see the option, perhaps it just isn’t available at the time. You can see the full list of supported regions here.
