Apple is working on yet another plan to take on the video game industry. According to Bloomberg, the company will debut a new dedicated gaming app next week during its Worldwide Developer Conference.
The app will act as a revamp to its Game Centre platform, but Apple plans to integrate new features into the experience and, at the same time, allow users to launch games directly from the new app. The report says the app will serve as a hub for all things gaming, achievements, and leaderboards.
When users browse the app, they will see games they already have installed, as well as ads for new games available on the App Store. When using the app on macOS, the app will integrate App Store games as well as games users have downloaded outside of the App Store.
This isn’t the first time we have heard about this revamped gaming app. Reports started swirling last year already when rumours claimed that Apple was working on a dedicated gaming app similar to the Xbox App.
Apple has also announced that the company acquired its first video game studio, RAC7. The studio is responsible for the popular game, Sneaky Sasquatch, which originally released alongside the Apple Arcade gaming service back in 2021.
It is unclear what Apple plans to do with the studio, but RAC7 claims it will continue to operate on its own.
WWDC is set to kick off next week. We’ll see Apple debut its new “glassy” overhauled operating systems for iPhone, iPad, and macOS as well as the new homeOS platform. The gaming announcements have also now been added to the list of anticipated reveals.
