In the latest report ahead of Apple’s WWDC 2025 event next week, Bloomberg says that Apple is going to ditch the current naming convention for its operating systems when it announces the revamped software lineup.
The report says that instead of Apple announcing iOS 19, which is the natural follow-up to iOS 18 from last year, the company will announce iOS 26, to mark the year which the software will span across. Usually, new iOS versions are released around September, so iOS 26 will span September 2025 – September 2026.
The same naming convention will be implemented across other devices and platforms too. So expect iPadOS 26, watchOS 26, macOS 26, tvOS 26 and visionOS 26. The number 27 will likely follow next year.
The change to the operating system names makes sense for Apple. Right now, the software lineup is kind of all over the place. Very few of them are on the same version with watchOS 12, iOS 18, and visionOS 2, for example. Moving to a set number for that set year makes things easier to understand.
Apple is expected to announce this change during its WWDC 2025 keynote address next week. You can tune into the event on 9 June at 19:00 CAT. Find out more about the event here.
