Aquaman 2 and Shazam! 2 Have Both Been Delayed

Aquaman 2, or otherwise known as Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, as well as Shazam! 2, or Shazam!: Fury of the Gods, have both been delayed by Warner Bros Discovery. The delays were part of a number of changes made to the company’s release calendar following new ownership.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom was originally intended to release on 17 March 2023 but has now been moved to 25 December 2023, quite a hefty delay by almost a year. Meanwhile, Shazam!: Fury of the Gods, which was expected to release this December, has been shifted to Aquaman 2‘s old date of 17 March 2023.

This comes in light of a business restructuring currently happening at Warner Bros Discovery. The recent purging of films like Batgirl, which was nearly completed on a budget of around $70 million, and a number of television shows was met with backlash from the online community. It’s also speculated that The Flash could be scrapped altogether alongside Warner Bros’ planned Supergirl spin-off.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will see the return of leading actor Jason Momoa in the titular role and it will once again be directed by The Conjuring and Aquaman 1 director James Wan. Shazam!: Fury of the Gods will star Zachary Levi as the titular superhero again and will also be helmed by the first film’s director David F. Sandberg.

While several projects at Warner Bros are currently up in the air, it looks like Matt Reeves’ The Batman 2 survived this purge and is making good progress as Reeves is currently planning the script. A Joker sequel, titled Joker: Folie à Deux, has been confirmed with Joaquin Phoenix returning alongside Lady Gaga who will presumably play Harley Quinn.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom now releases on 25 December 2023 and Shazam!: Fury of the Gods releases on 17 March 2023.
