Arcane Season 2 Isn’t Coming in 2023 Says Riot Games

After the huge success of the League of Legends animated show, Arcane, most fans expected that a second season would arrive sometime in 2023. According to Riot Games, we shouldn’t expect season 2 to release this year as the studio is still in the process of animating the season. While 2024 isn’t ruled out, it might be a while until we continue the adventure.

The first season of Arcane launched in 2021 on Netflix to critical acclaim, winning plenty of awards including Best Adaptation at The Game Awards last year. The show retold the origins story of sisters Jinx and Vi who find themselves on opposing sides of a conflict in the underbelly of Zaun. It featured plenty of easter eggs and references to League of Legends including other characters but largely stood on its own as a fantastic, accessible show for newcomers to the franchise.

Speaking to IGN recently, Riot Games CEO Nicolo Laurent said that work on the second season of Arcane is only as far as the third episode right now. “I just watched the third episode of Season 2 before my flight to China, so we’re making progress on it,” said Laurent. “It is not ready yet, and there’s two reasons for that. One, you want the quality, you just don’t wanna rush, and so that takes time. So that’s the good reason.”

Laurent continued by stating that season 2 will not arrive in 2023 as work continues on the project:

“The bad reason is honestly like, we didn’t know if Season 1 was gonna be a success… If I had known we could have started Season 2 way earlier, but we didn’t know so we kind of waited a bit and so now we’re paying the price, so it’s unfortunately not going to be this year.”

Arcane is currently available to watch on Netflix.
