Arkane Lyon’s Dinga Bakaba, the director of Deathloop and the upcoming Marvel’s Blade, has openly criticised Microsoft after the company made the decision to close a handful of Bethesda studios yesterday including Redfall developer Arkane Austin and Hi-Fi Rush developer Tango Gameworks, calling it a “fucking gut stab.”
Speaking candidly on Twitter/X, Dinga Bakaba spoke up about the recent Bethesda studio cuts which impacted several of his colleagues over at Arkane Austin and other studios caught in the crossfire. “Permission to be human: to any executive reading this, friendly reminder that video games are an entertainment/cultural industry, and your business as a corporation is to take care of your artists/entertainers and help them create value for you,” Bakaba began.
He added:
“Don’t throw us into gold fever gambits, don’t use us as strawmen for miscalculations/blind spots, don’t make our work environments darwinist jungles. You say we make you proud when we make a good game. Make us proud when times are tough. We know you can, we’ve seen it before. For now, great teams are sunsetting before our eyes again, and it’s a fucking gut stab. Lyon is safe, but please be tactful and discerning about all this, and respect affected folks’ voice and leave it room to be heard, it’s their story to tell, their feelings to express.”
Arkane Studios comprised of two main development teams: Arkane Lyon, which developed the Dishonored games and Deathloop; and the recently-shuttered Arkane Austin, which developed 2017’s Prey and last year’s Redfall.
It’s difficult to say how many jobs were lost in the studio cuts, though we’ll probably hear numbers soon. It’s also easy to sympathise with Bakaba who had just seen fellow industry creatives unceremoniously laid off in one of the worst mass studio closures in recent memory. Microsoft is set to host an Xbox Games Showcase in June. All critical eyes will be on the company on whether they’ll address these studio cuts or not.
