Assassin’s Creed Live Service Game in Development by Ubisoft Veteran Teams

Ubisoft is currently working on Assassin’s Creed Infinity, a new live service Assassin’s Creed game inspired by the likes of Fortnite and GTA Online. The ambitious project will have a number of features, including an evolving world, multiple settings and more.

According to a recent Bloomberg article, Assassin’s Creed Infinity is in the works at Ubisoft (its existence also acknowledged by a company spokeswoman), a live service platform that will serve as the foundation for a new, evolving style of game from the developer. Both Ubisoft Quebec and Ubisoft Montreal, who were previously responsible for numerous entries in the Assassin’s Creed franchise, are reportedly working on Infinity.

The project was largely inspired by the success of Fortnite and GTA Online, two massive live service titles that have currently amassed millions of players worldwide. It seems like Ubisoft might be trying to target these successful numbers with the Assassin’s Creed IP now, which will undoubtedly be worked on and evolved for years to come.

Assassin’s Creed Infinity will also be connected to the previous entries, though will feel different enough that it stands on its own. Players will take part in multiple historical settings that have become a staple of the franchise. Furthermore, Bloomberg states that this will be their most ambitious Assassin’s Creed project to date. Unfortunately, the article also states that many Ubisoft employees baulked at the idea of Infinity and may have exited the company as a result, though development on the project has continued.

Assassin’s Creed Infinity seems to be targeting a 2024 release, so it’s possible that we’ll have a new single-player entry before then. The future of the franchise might be heading towards a live service route that many games have found tremendous success in, but we’ll wait and see how Ubisoft approaches this model and if it works for the evolving timelines of Assassin’s Creed.
