Assassin’s Creed Shadows Physical Version Requires Internet to Install

Last night, Ubisoft officially unveiled Assassin’s Creed Shadows, the next major entry in the long-running stealth-action franchise, with a striking cinematic reveal trailer. Since then, new information has been made available about the game including its pre-order incentives, editions and dual protagonists. However, those looking to purchase a physical version will need an internet connection to install the game.

As reported by Video Games Chronicle, Ubisoft made this clear on the box art for Assassin’s Creed Shadows which contains a label in the bottom corner that reads, “Internet required to install the game.” It’s not known why an internet connection is needed to install the game but the same can be said about Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora which also needed one for its physical version. Star Wars Outlaws will also require internet when it launches later this year.

In Avatar: Frontier of Pandora‘s case, a day-one patch was needed in order to play the game. For many gamers, this might not seem like a deal-breaker as most players are typically hooked up to the internet in some way. That said, this also raises some concerns about game preservation since Ubisoft can easily shut down servers in several years, rendering the game unplayable. The company recently did this for The Crew, which is no longer playable anymore after its servers were turned off last month.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows will be the first game in the franchise to feature a real historical figure as a playable character in the African samurai, Yasuke. It will also be the first Assassin’s Creed game set in feudal Japan. Players will have the option of two playstyles between its protagonists. Yasuke will be the more aggressive, combat-heavy option for players who prefer tackling enemies head-on while the shinobi protagonist, Naoe, will utilise the shadows to strike foes with stealthy precision and deadly assassinations.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows launches on 15 November 2024 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
