Assassin’s Creed Shadows Update Adds New Challenging Difficulty Mode

Ubisoft has released a new update for Assassin’s Creed Shadows today that adds a new, more challenging difficulty mode called Nightmare along with a new free story back in collaboration with Critical Role. This includes a new quest, a new Ally to recruit and a new trophy/achievement for completing the quest.

Title Update 1.0.6 for Assassin’s Creed Shadows will be available today on consoles and PC, bringing a new difficulty setting called Nightmare. This challenging difficulty mode increases the damage output of enemies while making players’ defence options less effective. Parries will now require pitch-perfect timing to execute successfully. Furthermore, enemy AI is much faster, smarter and more aggressive, while combat resources like rations and shinobi items will be far more difficult to come by.

Another big addition in the latest update is a new quest called “A Critical Encounter”, made in partnership with Critical Role. “Rufino, an old friend of Tomiko and Heiji, calls in a life debt after uncovering a deadly conspiracy. While working as a translator, he discovered evidence that a secretive organisation has been hiring assassins to eliminate influential commoners,” Ubisoft explained. Players will need to complete “Way of the Blacksmith” and have unlocked Yasuke as a playable character in order to accept the new quest at the Hideout.

Other notable features introduced in Title Update 1.0.6 include the ability to toggle headgear in cutscenes and new Ultra Low specs on PC for players who have a low-end set-up.

Ubisoft talked about adding a more challenging difficulty mode to Assassin’s Creed Shadows back in April, so it’s good to see the developer follow up on that promise. In case you missed it, Ubisoft also added new free story content to the game last month in the form of “The Works of Luis Frois” quest.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows is available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC. Read the full patch notes right here.
