In light of the success of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, a new report reveals that the live-action TV series based on the franchise still in development at Netflix. The collaboration with Ubisoft to produce the new live-action series was originally announced back in 2020, though any updates on its progress had gone silent over the past few years.
According to Game File, the Assassin’s Creed live-action TV series is still in “active” development at Netflix. Unfortunately, neither Netflix nor Ubisoft have provided any comment on it since its announcement five years ago, so take this with a pinch of salt.
Considering that Assassin’s Creed Shadows turned out to be quite a big success for Ubisoft – and its return to stealth-focused gameplay with striking visuals certainly helped win over fans of the series again – now seems like the right time to move ahead with a TV adaptation. It’s unclear if the original plan is still in place but the reports suggest that the companies are still keen on the idea.
This isn’t the first time that the Assassin’s Creed IP has been eyed for a live-action project. In 2016, Ubisoft and director Justin Kurzel created a live-action movie starring Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard and Jeremy Irons. The plot of the movie was largely detached from the video game source material, telling a mostly original story that’s not too dissimilar to the first game. However, it was panned by critics and fans on release for its lacklustre writing and directing, and poor performances despite its talented cast.
Ubisoft’s head of Film & Television, Jason Altman, stated at the time:
“For more than 10 years, millions of fans around the world have helped shape the Assassin’s Creed brand into an iconic franchise. We’re thrilled to create an Assassin’s Creed series with Netflix and we look forward to developing the next saga in the Assassin’s Creed universe.”
