ASUS is reportedly deep in development with its new Meta Horizon OS VR headset. A new report claims that ASUS has codenamed this project “Tarius,” and the headset is being developed under the ROG label.
Very little is known about the headset at this rate. We know that ASUS picked up licensing to produce its own ROG VR headset in 2024 when Meta announced it would provide the Meta Quest operating system, Horizon OS, to any hardware manufacturer in order for them to produce their own products.
ASUS was seemingly one of the first hardware brands to jump at the opportunity. The company then kicked off working on this headset.
Given how ASUS ROG is known for its high-end, feature-packed product range, this “Project Tarius” VR headset is likely going to be an incredible product with some top-tier features.
As a big VR fan and an owner of a Meta Quest 3, I would personally like to see ASUS include an OLED panel in this headset. It is likely the only missing feature on the Meta Quest 3 that is keeping it from being a “pro” product.
However, the report claims that ASUS is including a QD-LCD in the headset that will feature local dimming. This is the first time we’ll see local dimming being used in a VR headset, so if that is the case, it will be interesting to see how it works. The ASUS ROG VR headset will also include eye tracking and face tracking. We don’t know if it will include exterior cameras for mixed reality features.
So far, only ASUS has stepped up to produce a Meta Horizon OS headset licensed under Meta. We don’t know if other brands are working on one, but this is the first report we have seen. The headset will likely include its own on-board SOC capable of running games from the Meta Horizon Store like Asgard’s Wrath II and Batman Arkham Shadow. It will also include the ability to connect to your PC to enjoy PC VR games.
