Avatar 2 The Way of Water First Footage CinemaCon

Avatar 2 Gets an Official Title, Debuts First Footage

Avatar 2 finally has an official title. Director James Cameron and Disney revealed that the sequel will be titled Avatar: The Way of Water, and will release on 14 December 2022 internationally. Alongside the announcement, fans at CinemaCon were also treated to the movie’s first footage.

Avatar: The Way of Water more or less gives us an idea of where we’ll be heading in the anticipated sequel. Cameron previously expressed interest in exploring the vast oceans of Pandora, the fictional planet that the movies are set in. The Way of Water will likely take us underwater to an oceanic alien world.

Disney also held a presentation on Avatar: The Way of Water at CinemaCon recently, debuting the first footage. While this footage has yet to surface online, it’s a good indication that we’ll be getting a trailer soon.

Avatar producer Jon Landau provided some insight into the exciting sequel:

“One of the strengths of Jim Cameron’s scripts is they are always universal and relatable themes that he weaves into them.

At the center of each of the four sequels will be the Sully family. Each story will be a stand-alone and each will come to its own conclusion. There will be a fulfilling resolution to each film, but when looked at as a whole the journey across all four will create a larger epic saga.”

Cameron is planning on making four Avatar sequels, greatly expanding the story set up from the first film. Much of the original cast will also return, including Sam Worthington as Jake Sully, Zoe Saldana as Neytiri and Stephen Lang as Miles Quaritch. Other cast members also include Sigourney Weaver, Kate Winslet, Michelle Yeoh, Giovanni Ribisi and more.

Avatar: The Way of Water releases in cinemas on 14 December internationally and 16 December in North America.
