Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is turning out to be an ambitious undertaking from developer Ubisoft Massive. The AAA game is based on the world created by James Cameron and will take place in between the events of the first and second blockbuster movies. It’s been quite a while since the game was officially announced, but the studio has an answer for why Frontiers of Pandora is taking so long in development.
Speaking to Games Radar in a recent interview, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora creative director Magnus Jansén talked about the challenges of building upon Avatar‘s world. “One of the most exciting challenges has been to build a living and reactive world inhabited by unique creatures and new characters,” said the director.

When asked about the game’s lengthy development time, Jansén responded with:
“The time has been spent on building a brand-new part of Pandora and creating the tools needed to bring it to life on the latest generation of console and PC hardware.”
Jansén also briefly talked about Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora being first-person and how immersion is achieved through this perspective, allowing players to interact with Pandora’s world more naturally:
“Our goal has always been to allow people to finally get to go there and be immersed in that world, feel it, and interact with it–and there was no better way to do so than first-person.”
Ubisoft Massive is working on Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora in collaboration with Disney and Lightstorm Entertainment. It’s being powered by the Snowdrop Engine which was previously used to develop The Division. Judging by the reveal trailer, it’s also boasting some impressive visuals that beautifully recreate the world of the movies including the Na’vi, the natives of the planet. The game will explore a new location of Pandora that wasn’t seen in the movies.
Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is currently in development for PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
