Yesterday, Marvel Studios and Disney decided to a host a five-hour long stream for the upcoming MCU movie Avengers: Doomsday, where it gradually revealed the full cast list. While it hasn’t necessarily set the internet on fire, there are a few surprise casting announcements including several returning characters from the original X-Men saga of movies such as Ian McKellen and James Marsden returning as Magneto and Cyclops, respectively. However, there were also plenty of notable exclusions too.
Marvel Studios has slowly introduced a handful of X-Men into the MCU after Disney’s buyout of 20th Century Fox, starting small with Evan Peters’ Quicksilver in WandaVision (kind of) and Patrick Stewart’s Professor X in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Of course, Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine was the biggest move thus far after teaming up with Deadpool.
However, the full cast list for Avengers: Doomsday now goes all in on bringing many of the original X-Men actors back into the fold: Ian McKellen as Magneto, Kelsey Grammer as Beast, James Marsden as Cyclops, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler and Patrick Stewart returning as Professor X.

There are also several notable exclusions to mention, the biggest being Tom Holland’s Spider-Man and Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange. Aside from Chris Hemsworth returning as Thor, none of the original Avengers cast is mentioned either except Robert Downey Jr, though he will be playing a different character as Doctor Doom.
Elsewhere, there’s also no sign of Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel, Iman Vellani’s Ms. Marvel, Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool and Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch. The popular theory is that these characters will make surprise appearances in the movie or are being saved for the sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars. According to The Hollywood Reporter, more cast members will be announced in the near future so there’s still hope.
Avengers: Doomsday arrives in cinemas on 1 May 2026.
