Avowed, the upcoming fantasy RPG from The Outer Worlds developer Obsidian Entertainment, was mostly marketed as a first-person experience. However, the developers have now confirmed that it can be played in third-person too, allowing you to see your character as you explore and fight.
Obsidian Entertainment announced the exciting news during a recent gameplay deep dive of Avowed which offered a closer look at combat, dialogue choices and how they impact the game, exploration and some very unique characters that we’ll be meeting on the journey. During one of the gameplay sections, game director Carrie Patel confirmed that Avowed can also be played in third-person too. The reception has been tremendous, to say the least.
The online response to the news was met with a lot of positivity, especially for players who have shown renewed interest in Avowed thanks to the third-person option. In most RPGs where you’re able to craft new gear and wear different outfits or armour, most players prefer to have a camera perspective that shows their custom character off. Luckily, Avowed will give players that option – a stark contrast to The Outer Worlds which only featured first-person gameplay.
During the gameplay deep dive, Obsidian Entertainment also went over several details about the game including how crazy your dialogue choices can get. If you’ve played Fallout: New Vegas or The Outer Worlds then you might already know that the developer has a knack for crafting clever, witty replies, compliments, back-handed compliments or something in-between. There’s a lot to digest so we recommend giving the entire video a watch below.
In case you missed it, Avowed also got a shorter gameplay trailer during the recent Xbox Games Showcase that basically condensed everything discussed in the deep dive. While a release date has yet to be announced, we know that it’s coming later this year for Xbox Series X/S and PC. Obsidian accidentally let slip a release date of 12 November 2024 in a blog post that has since been edited to remove this information, for some reason.
