Back 4 Blood 2 in Development Under Codename ‘Gobi 2’ – Report

A sequel to Back 4 Blood is reportedly in development with the codename “Gobi 2”. Back in 2021, developer Turtle Rock Studios released the first game which was touted as a spiritual successor to the acclaimed Left 4 Dead series. In fact, the studio consists of talents that previously worked on those games. Despite middling reviews, it still managed to attract over six million players within its first month. That was probably enough for Back 4 Blood 2 to enter development.

Media outlet MP1st dug unearthed this information from the resume of actor and stuntman Jesse Hutch, who has a project listed “Gobi 2” that he’s currently working on with Turtle Rock Studios. The led many to believe that this is, in fact, Back 4 Blood 2 as the codename for the first game was “Gobi.” To add a bit more fuel to the fire, the domain name “back4blood2.com” was registered back in May 2023 and still remains active.

In July 2023, we also reported on another rumour claiming that the sequel would be shifting to Unreal Engine 5. Whispers of a sequel also predate this report as in February last year, Turtle Rock Studios ended all support for the first game to move efforts onto its next game, which many already assumed was Back 4 Blood 2.

The first Back 4 Blood had a lot of potential to evolve the formula of the Left 4 Dead series. By all accounts, it featured great visuals, solid gameplay and unique concepts but as reviewers noted at launch, it felt like the game was simply doubling down on what already worked in the past instead of truly moving it forward.

With a sequel, Turtle Rock Studios now has the opportunity to take all the lessons learned from the first game and apply it to its successor. Hopefully, this results in a more memorable experience that also lasts a lot longer too.
