Balatro Sales Spike The Game Awards Game of the Year

Balatro Sales Spike After The Game Awards Nominations

Sales for the hit indie roguelike deck-building card game Balatro have spiked since its nominations at The Game Awards including Game of the Year. The sales figures mainly stem from the mobile version of the game which apparently saw a sharp sales increase on 18 November, the same day that The Game Awards announced its nominees. It’s unclear how much the game has been sold on other platforms but we imagine quite a lot.

As reported by PocketGamer, information provided by App Magic says that Balatro saw a sales spike on 18 November after it received nominations in five categories at The Game Awards including Game of the Year, Best Game Direction, Best Indie Game, Best Debut Indie Game and Best Mobile Game. This data is mainly relevant to the mobile version of the game, though it’s also available on numerous other platforms like PC, Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S. In total, it reportedly generated $4.4 million in revenue on its mobile release alone.

Balatro currently sits with Overwhelmingly Positive reviews on Steam and has a 91 average rating on OpenCritic with 100% of critics recommending the game. Developed by the one-person developer LocalThunk, Balatro puts a fiendish twist on poker by introducing roguelike deck-building elements.

The game description for Balatro reads:

“Combine valid poker hands with unique Joker cards in order to create varied synergies and builds. Earn enough chips to beat devious blinds, all while uncovering hidden bonus hands and decks as you progress. You’re going to need every edge you can get in order to reach the boss blind, beat the final ante and secure victory.”

Balatro is available on mobile via iOS and Android, Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC. In case you’re still on the fence about picking up the game, read our article on why we think Balatro is just that good and actually earns its Game of the Year praise.
