Balatro is That Good Game of the Year The Game Awards

Balatro Sells 3.5 Million Copies Across All Platforms

Balatro, the roguelike deck-building poker-themed card game that’s currently sweeping up awards season, has sold 3.5 million copies across all platforms since launching earlier this year. The game made the announcement on social media, revealing it’s impressively high sales numbers for an indie title.

The official X account for Balatro posted an update yesterday confirming that the card game had sold 3.5 million copies, presumably across all platforms including PC, consoles and mobile, which is likely the biggest platform for the game. It recently took home Apple Arcade Game of the Year, according to a press release, further cementing its great sales streak.

Balatro is currently up for a handful of nominations at The Game Awards including Game of the Year, where it’s competing against big titles like Metaphor: ReFantazio, Black Myth: Wukong, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree. It has also been nominated for Best Game Direction, Best Mobile Game, Best Independent Game and Best Debut Indie Game.

Soon after Balatro was nominated at The Game Awards, it was reported that sales for the game spiked, specifically on mobile. While the game received high review scores earlier this year, it mostly flew under the radar until it had a surge in popularity after receiving the biggest nominations of The Game Awards and several other awards shows.

The description for Balatro reads:

“Combine valid poker hands with unique Joker cards in order to create varied synergies and builds. Earn enough chips to beat devious blinds, all while uncovering hidden bonus hands and decks as you progress. You’re going to need every edge you can get in order to reach the boss blind, beat the final ante and secure victory.”

  • The definitive poker roguelike experience.
  • Endless possibilities – every pick-up, discard and joker can dramatically alter the course of your run.
  • In-depth campaign mode complete with 8 difficulties, as well as challenge and seeded runs.

Balatro is available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PC, Nintendo Switch and mobile. If you’re still on the fence about trying it out, read our thoughts on why it deserves to win Game of the Year.
