Baldur’s Gate 3 Director Says Single-Player Games Aren’t Dead, ‘They Just Have to Be Good’

Baldur’s Gate 3 director Swen Vincke has offered his take on the whole “are single-player games dead?” argument that seems to always pop up once a year like the Grinch. This isn’t all that surprising considering Vincke has always been on the right, favourable side of the gaming industry, admired by players for his honesty and putting players first. He now has a very simple response to single-player games supposedly being dead: they aren’t dead, “they just have to be good.”

“That time of year again when big single-player games are declared dead. Use your imagination. They’re not. They just have to be good,” said Swen Vincke on X. He later added, “The why of this tweet is hearing chatter about important industry figures stating there is no future for (big) single player games. Which means discouraging investment in (big) single player games. Which bothers me. Because I don’t think they have it right.”

Vincke ended his thread by stating that good single-player games will continue to do as well as they’ve been doing in the past, the formula there is they just need to be good. The director shared a similar sentiment during his speech at The Game Awards last year when he presented Game of the Year, basically stating that games that put the player first and are made with passion instead of chasing money will always be rewarded (and awarded).

He stated:

“The problem is that this type of attitude has consequences. Because before you know it becomes a mantra. So this is just me trying to give some counterweight. I think good single player games will continue to do as well as they have always done. They just need to be good and innovate enough.”

In related news, Hasbro announced that it plans on revealing the future of the Baldur’s Gate franchise very soon. Unfortunately, Larian Studios, which developed the award-winning Baldur’s Gate 3, won’t be handling a fourth game as the studio is working on new projects at the moment.
