Last week, developer Larian Studios revealed that it was working on a new hotfix for Baldur’s Gate 3 on consoles to prevent game crashes and implement stability improvements for players with over 100 mods installed. Hotfix 29 officially went live on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S yesterday, though the new patch now seems to limit the amount of mods you can install.
Larian Studios explained on Twitter/X that the hotfix 29 for Baldur’s Gate 3 “introduces a limit on the number of mods you can install on console to prevent crashes and performance issues.” Generally, installing over 100 mods is not recommended as certain mods could potentially conflict with each other, leading to games breaking, save data being corrupted or several new bugs being introduced.
The new hotfix now limits the amount of mods players can install on consoles, which will hopefully encourage some to clean up their mod list and remove any unnecessary mods for their playthroughs. Users have also offered some tips about installing mods – for the most part, you’ll want to only use mods that are relevant to your current campaign. There’s no way to add or remove mods in the middle of playthroughs so you have to stick with what you install or have a back-up save for the sole purpose of testing mods.
Console players, Hotfix #29 is now rolling out!
This hotfix introduces a limit on the number of mods you can install on console to prevent crashes and performance issues, and resolves an issue with accessing multiplayer lobby settings on Xbox.

In other news, Larian Studios has revealed that player numbers for Baldur’s Gate 3 are actually higher in 2024 than they were at launch, largely due to returning players eager to try the game out again with mod support. In addition to mods, the game is quite replayable due to the various build options, combinations and branching choices you can make during the story.
