The nudity and sex in Baldur’s Gate 3 will be censored for its release in Japan next month. Spike Chunsoft, which is handling publishing duties for the Japanese version of the game, announced that it would be cutting out explicit sexual content from the Larian Studios RPG when it arrives in Japan on 21 December in compliance with CERO’s Code of Ethics standards.
Basically, Japanese players won’t be able to toggle on any sexual content in Baldur’s Gate 3 as it will be locked to “off” in the settings. This includes “display of genitals”, “display of nudity in cutscenes” and “view sex scenes.” Spike Chunsoft also added that certain torture scenes will also be removed or locked out in the Japanese release, specifically torture methods players can use in Act 1’s Goblin Camp.

Larian made these changes in compliance with Appendix 3 of CERO’s Code of Ethics, which states that the expression of genitals and sexual intercourse is strictly prohibited. Baldur’s Gate 3 contains its fair share of sex scenes and full-frontal nudity. While it isn’t necessarily the most “explicit” sex scenes in a video game (except for a certain evil Drow character), these standards needed to be met in order for the game to ever get a release in Japan.
Other popular games with sexual content that had to be heavily censored in Japan include The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Cyberpunk 2077 and The Last of Us Part II, among many others. This might be disappointing news for some Japanese players, especially since Baldur’s Gate 3 built up a reputation for being quite a horny game.
In related news, a recent patch has made it harder for players to romance Lae’zel. It now requires them to earn a high approval rating with the Githyanki companion through actions as well as dialogue and make (often brash) choices that Lae’zel would approve of. Larian previously stated that it would consider releasing a physical edition of the game if there’s enough player interest.
Baldur’s Gate 3 is available for PC and PS5.
