Baldur’s Gate 3 launched on PS5 a few days ago, giving PlayStation fans a chance to experience the critically acclaimed RPG from developer Larian Studios. However, a new tech analysis conducted by Digital Foundry revealed that the PS5 version of the game is comparable to running at ultra settings on PC, though with some minor caveats.
As revealed by a new Digital Foundry analysis, Baldur’s Gate 3 on PS5 appears to be running at the ultra settings preset on PC. The team noted that this is quite rare for a console game, with the PS5 version showing a tremendous amount of detail, especially with natural lighting in outdoor areas, only slightly hampered by Larian’s proprietary engine tech. Digital Foundry also adds that the PS5’s radial menu and console-specific UI design is good in the early stages of the game but can become a bit cumbersome once more spells and actions unlock at higher levels.

For the most part, Digital Foundry walked away decently impressed by Baldur’s Gate 3‘s performance on PS5 apart from some glaring hiccups, with Oliver MacKenzie stating:
“Wrapping up, Baldur’s Gate 3 works on PS5. As long as you can get over any controller hangups, the game performs reasonably well on Sony’s current-gen console, at least relative to what we see from mid-range PCs. However, while you’ll be spending hours in this game with no performance problems whatsoever, the underlying issues found later in the game are still present on PlayStation 5.”
Earlier this week, Larian Studios detailed all the changes it made to the game on PS5 including a more fitting UI design, radial menu and wheel for easy access to spells, actions and items. Digital Foundry stressed that at higher levels, the menu can become a bit cluttered and difficult to navigate as it fills up the radial menu, making combat encounters a bit of a chore if you’re navigating the wheel looking for the right utilities.
In other news, Larian confirmed that crossplay will be coming at a later stage to PS5 and PC. The game recently debuted with a higher average score than Elden Ring on Metacritic and OpenCritic, making it the highest-rated PS5 game of all time so far.
Baldur’s Gate 3 is now available on PS5 and PC. An Xbox version is also planned to launch later this year. Check out the Digital Foundry analysis below:
