Baldur’s Gate 3 on PS5 Has Serious Frame Rate Problems

Baldur’s Gate 3 is out on PS5 for those who pre-ordered the Deluxe Edition. The game is expected to launch this week on 6 September for all users. Now that players have had time with the game on PlayStation 5, details on the graphics modes have been revealed.

According to Larian Studios, Baldur’s Gate 3 has two graphics modes on PS5. There’s a Quality Mode and a Performance Mode. Each mode offers a different approach to the game visuals.

Quality Mode targets 30FPS at 1440p which is then upscaled to 4K. According to tests (seen below), the game does drop a few frames during some intense scenes and detailed environments. Performance Mode, on the other hand, targets 60FPS at 1080p which is also upscaled to 4K. Just like Quality Mode, the 60FPS isn’t consistent.

Both modes suffer from frame drops. Performance Mode can see the frame rate drop down to 30FPS and Quality Mode has the same issue at 25-30FPS during intense scenes. These frame rate issues definitely recommend enabling VRR if you can to help mitigate the stutter. Keep in mind that VRR is only effective if the frame rate stays above 48FPS.

Overall, the visual quality across both Quality and Performance Mode stays the same. This means textures are the same and the game’s sharpness level, distant objects and texture quality remain the same. The Quality Mode just allows for a slightly higher resolution.

When it comes to the loading times in Baldur’s Gate 3 on PS5, the game struggles a bit here too. Loading into the game can take up to 40 seconds depending on where you are. However, teleporting from waypoint to waypoint is instant on PS5 as it is on PC.

Those who have played Baldur’s Gate 3 on PC would know that as the game gets further in, it becomes more demanding. On PC, load times increase and the final Act 3 is also more graphically intense than the first two acts. It will be interesting to see how the PS5 version stacks up when Act 3 arrives. The game will likely suffer from even more performance hiccups.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is launching on 6 September for PS5 and is now available on PC.
