Baldur’s Gate 3 is officially Steam’s second biggest game launch of the year following its hugely successful release last week. The game launched on 3 August and has slowly been climbing up the Steam charts. However, this past weekend showed its true success as the peak player count surpassed 800K users on Sunday night.
Why is it the “second-biggest” you may ask? Well, Hogwarts Legacy, which launched earlier this year, was slightly more popular than Baldur’s Gate 3. The peak player count for Hogwarts Legacy hit 879,308 compared to 814,666 on Baldur’s Gate. Considering Warner Bros’ unlimited marketing spend for Hogwarts Legacy, Baldur’s Gate 3’s success is remarkable.

The game will unlikely go higher than 814k users. The launch weekend for games is usually when these charts are set in stone. With that being said, you have to respect that an early-access game, which is actually quite a niche genre too, has done so well.
Baldur’s Gate 3’s success won’t end there. PS5 users are also pre-ordering the title on the platform marking a surge in sales. The game is expected to launch on 6 September. Xbox users, however, will have to wait a bit longer. Larian Studios is still struggling to get the game’s split-screen co-op working on the Xbox Series S. Until that is fixed, there’s no release on the Xbox systems in sight.
According to the studio, we will unlikely see the game launch on Xbox Series X/S until 2024. Larian has been quite open regarding the ongoing issues with the Xbox Series S and its power limitations in porting the game.
Baldur’s Gate 3 is now out on PC and if you haven’t played it yet, you should. We don’t often get games like these.
