Baldur’s Gate 3 officially launched last year on PC and consoles after spending a few years in early access. At launch, the game drew in massive player numbers while receiving some of the highest review scores of the year next to The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. However, new data reveals that player numbers are actually higher in 2024 than at the game’s launch, no doubt due to the introduction of mod support via patch 7.
Larian Studios’ Michael Douse mentioned on Twitter/X that “our average daily peak concurrents are up 3% this year over last year” for Baldur’s Gate 3. Another impressive stat also revealed that “daily active users are up 20% over last year.” It doesn’t need to be said how remarkable this is considering that Baldur’s Gate 3 is primarily a single-player RPG (with multiplayer options, of course). However, there’s a pretty simple answer to why player retention is so high.
Patch 7 launched last month on PC and consoles, introducing official mod support to Baldur’s Gate 3. There are well over 100 mods available on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S right now for players to try out, ranging from cosmetic modifications to new character creation options, new classes, new spells, cheats and so much more. It’s a treasure trove of great community-made content curated by Larian Studios that has contributed towards the spike in player numbers.
Elsewhere in the same post, Douse addressed the previous news that two copies of the game were sold in Vatican City. It seems like one more copy has now been sold in The Holy See. “I am also happy to announce we have achieved 1 (one) more sale in The Holy See, the Vatican itself,” said Douse. “Thank you Mr Pope and enjoy the game.”
Larian Studios is currently working on a hotfix to address problems players are having for installing over 100 mods simultaneously. Obviously this isn’t a smart choice as it could lead to game-breaking situations and bugs, so we recommend dropping your mod list to a manageable size.
