Developer Larian Studios saw massive success after the PC launch of Baldur’s Gate 3, its latest RPG. Last week, Steam charts revealed that it was the platform’s second-biggest launch of 2023 behind Hogwarts Legacy, amassing over 470,000 concurrent players at its peak. It’s understood that those numbers have increased since then to around 800,000 players in its peak. With the PC version out and making waves, PS5 pre-orders have now skyrocketed ahead of the game’s arrival on PlayStation this September.
As spotted by Twitter user BenjiSales, Baldur’s Gate 3 is now the second best-selling pre-order in the US, trailing just behind Madden NFL 24. Over in the UK, it’s also the third best-selling pre-order behind EA Sports FC 24 and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. The hype surrounding the PC launch of the game certainly contributed to this spike in interest from the PlayStation community and it looks like it’s set to be a hit on console as well.

While a majority of reviews are still in progress, Baldur’s Gate 3 currently holds an average top critic rating of 94 on the review aggregate website OpenCritic, from the sites that have managed to submit early impressions. This makes it second highest-rated video game of 2023 overall, trailing behind The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – assuming the strong reviews continue to hold up.
In related news, Larian Studios has confirmed that Baldur’s Gate 3 will not launch on Xbox this year. While a PS5 version is scheduled to release in September, Xbox players may have to wait a while for the acclaimed RPG to arrive on Microsoft’s consoles. Larian once again cited the problems with implementing co-op on Xbox Series S as the reason why the developer is taking its time on the Xbox port.
That said, a recent leak suggests that both Baldur’s Gate 1 and 2 might be coming to Xbox Game Pass in the near future, which should tide Xbox players over until the third game arrives.
