Baldur’s Gate 3 Won So Many Awards, It Affected Development

Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke is suffering from success. He recently spoke about the numerous awards that last year’s RPG, Baldur’s Gate 3, won and how it affected development. According to Vincke, rotating teams of Larian developers were constantly being sent out to collect awards for the game from various awards shows. As a result, further development on the game was negatively impacted.

Speaking to Edge, Swen Vincke talked about how Larian Studios had to send rotating teams of developers to collect awards from shows after Baldur’s Gate 3 proved to be a massive sweep at ceremonies throughout 2023 and early 2024. “It affects development – there’s a lot of them. This has been a real problem,” said Vincke. However, the director also showed his appreciation for the game’s success, saying “it’s great that you have a moment of celebration […] we still have award shows that we’re going to. Because they’re important, and we really appreciate it.”

Reflecting on the experience, Vincke said it was “surprisingly draining on the soul.” Baldur’s Gate 3‘s content offering didn’t stop at the launch of the game. Larian Studios dropped several post-launch updates constantly adding new content, tweaks and changes to the already gargantuan RPG. It’s miraculous that, with so many developers being sent out to awards shows, the studio was still able to consistently deliver on those updates.

All good things must sadly come to an end. Larian confirmed last month that Baldur’s Gate 3 will not get any further post-launch support after official mod support is added to the game in September. Larian Studios is already working on two new projects based on its own IPs, which is a good sign that work on Divinity: Original Sin 3 might’ve begun. Unfortunately, it seems like the company won’t be tackling more D&D projects anytime soon.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
