Developer Larian Studios has confirmed that players who pre-purchased Baldur’s Gate 3 won’t be able to pre-load the game before launch, which means you’ll have to download the massive 122 GB install file on 3 August 2023. Pre-loading the game seemingly isn’t possible because it has already been out in Early Access for three years. This will mainly affect PC players, though it’s unclear if the same will apply to PS5 owners.
As spotted by PC Gamer, a recent Baldur’s Gate 3 community update confirmed that players won’t be able to pre-load anything until launch. “Baldur’s Gate 3 will launch on August 3rd at 5pm Gent time, or your non-Belgian timezone equivalent as shown above,” reads the community update. “There will be no pre-loading of the game before then.” Instead, the large 122 GB file will have to be downloaded on the day of release.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is finally on track to release on 3 August for PC, though Larian Studios revealed that save progress from Early Access won’t carry over to the full game, assuring players that “so much has changed that it’s really worth it to start afresh.”
A PS5 version of Baldur’s Gate 3 is currently expected to launch on 6 September. However, it will also release on Xbox Series X/S though it will be at an unspecified date as Microsoft is apparently struggling to get split-screen co-op working properly on Xbox Series S.
The official description for Baldur’s Gate 3 reads:
“Gather your party and return to the Forgotten Realms in a tale of fellowship and betrayal, sacrifice and survival, and the lure of absolute power. Mysterious abilities are awakening inside you, drawn from a mind flayer parasite planted in your brain. Resist, and turn darkness against itself. Or embrace corruption, and become ultimate evil. From the creators of Divinity: Original Sin 2 comes a next-generation RPG, set in the world of Dungeons & Dragons.”
In related news, Larian Studios revealed that Baldur’s Gate 3 enlisted the help of professional intimacy coordinators for its sex scenes. The RPG will include various romance options including one with a Druid that shapeshifts into a bear during an intimate encounter. Groovy.
