Battlefield V Server Tick Rate Revealed & Why It Matters

Earlier this week, Treyarch responded to concerns from Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 players over the significant drop in server tick rates. During the beta, the servers ran at 60Hz on PS4, but with launch, it dropped to 20Hz. Treyarch was quick to respond and explained that their first priority was to make sure the servers were stable. Now, they can focus on improving the multiplayer experience across all platforms. Naturally, the Black Ops 4 discussion led to the question about what the Battlefield V servers tick rates will be at launch.

DICE Multiplayer Producer, David Sirland, answered the question in a Tweet. The good news is that the Battlefield V servers will launch with the same tick rate as its predecessor, Battlefield 1. DICE is also committed to improving it going forward.

Server tick rate determines the player’s update rate and is something that the developer controls. On your side, you can improve your online experience by connecting via a stable line (ethernet vs. wifi), but when it comes to the netcode, your hands are tied. The higher the tick rate value, the faster the exchange between the player and the server. So, a higher tick rate results in a more responsive online experience. A 30Hz tick rate on the console means it is sending information at a rate of 30 times per second between the player and the server.

A 10Hz difference means a lot when it comes to a good online experience, especially in a first-person shooter game. There are, of course, a lot of other factors that impact the online experience (latency, hardware, location, server type), and these also differ between PC and console. Optimizing the netcode for a specific game is a post-launch service that can extend throughout the lifetime of a game.

It is, therefore, understandable that any developer who releases a massive online multiplayer game like the Battlefield and Call of Duty series first have to focus on server stability on launch day. Things like tick rate and uncapped framerates come second to that.

A good multiplayer experience is the bread and butter of any Battlefield game, but with Battlefield V, War Stories is the rich jam you put on the bread. We’ve already discussed the single-player campaigns, but a few more details recently surfaced.

The choices you make don’t change the outcome of any chapter, however, you do decide on how you want to execute each mission. In Under no Flag, you play as a captured bank robber who is given a chance to redeem himself by joining the SBS. In Nordlys you play as a ski commando. On this note, ski warfare played a major role in World War II and was the most common transportation for Norwegian soldiers. DICE also confirmed that there will be no new War Stories in Battlefield V after The Last Tiger.

Battlefield V releases worldwide on November 20 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. If you’re an EA or Origin Access member, you can start playing as early as November 9.
