BioWare Talks Mass Effect, Dragon Age 4 and The Challenges of The Pandemic

Looking into 2022, BioWare has shared a new studio update with fans in regards to how the company is doing. In addition, they shared more details on the current project at the studio including the new Mass Effect game and Dragon Age 4 (or whatever it is going to be called). BioWare made one thing clear in its blog post – the pandemic has caused massive disruption for the studio over the past two years. So much so that it has pushed back development time for upcoming projects substantially.

Thankfully, BioWare claims that the studio is now stable and most of the developers have adapted to the current work-from-home environments. Sadly, this milestone took a long time to achieve which resulted in some delays across the board. To think of it, we originally heard of the Mass Effect: Legendary Edition back in June 2020. The game leaked through multiple retailers all hinting at a late 2020 release date. Unfortunately, it only saw a release the following year in May 2021.

BioWare says that over the past year the studio has had to drastically adapt to a new way of life. They have not only had to adopt new tools, processes and ways to communicate but also learn to balance personal time and work.

But that’s had its upsides, too. We’ve come together as a studio to help each other out, even in our personal lives. We show up for each other and pull together as a team. One example is the February “Snowpocalypse” in Austin when the storm had literally taken down the city. It was encouraging and inspiring to hear how people were going above and beyond to ensure others were safe, including finding shelter or delivering food and water.

As challenging as the past few years have been, BioWare is confident that the future of the company looks bright. First off we have the launch of the upcoming Star Wars: The Old Republic expansion called Legacy of the Sith on 15 February. BioWare is also hard at work on new interactions of both the Dragon Age and Mass Effect series. The studio revealed that the Mass Effect poster they teased back during N7 Day in 2021 included five hidden secrets that touch on the game’s setting and features.

As for Dragon Age, the studio says they have the most talented people in the industry working on the game. They also once again confirmed that Dragon Age 4 is planned to be a single-player experience built on choices that matter.

When I took on the GM role, I talked about rebuilding our reputation, and that remains a huge priority. We are laser-focused on building back the trust of our fans and community, and we plan to do that by delivering the types of games that we are best known for and ensuring they are of the highest quality. Our mission is to “Create worlds of adventure, conflict, and companionship that inspire you to become the hero of your story.” We want the launch of our games to be seminal moments in the industry. We want each game to earn the kind of reaction we’ve seen with Mass Effect Legendary Edition. We feel that we have the right people, the right creative focus, and the support from EA to deliver on the promise.

Hopefully, we will see more of Dragon Age 4 and Mass Effect this year. Even if we don’t expect to play these new games anytime soon.
