Black Myth: Wukong Hits Over 1.4 Million Concurrent Steam Players

Black Myth: Wukong, the latest action RPG from developer Game Science, launched yesterday to record-breaking numbers on PC. According to Steam charts, the game has over 1.4 million concurrent players on PC via Steam right now, earning it the fourth spot on the platform’s Top Records chat behind Counter-Strike 2, Palworld and PUBG: Battlegrounds.

According to Steam charts, Black Myth: Wukong has amassed over 1.4 million concurrent players since its launch yesterday – 1,426,270 to be precise, surpassing the likes of Elden Ring (952,523 players), Dota 2 (1,291,328 players) and Lost Ark (1,324,761 players). Considering that it’s a Soulslike single-player game, this is quite impressive. While Palworld still holds the record for 2024’s biggest Steam launch, Black Myth: Wukong coming in second place wasn’t on anyone’s bingo card.

However, there might be a good reason behind the game’s sudden popularity surge. According to several comments online, Black Myth: Wukong is being extensively marketed in China, even appearing on national news channels. The game’s premise is largely based on the famous Chinese mythology of Journey to the West so it makes sense why the country would back its release and give it plenty of promotion. This could explain the game’s incredibly high player count on Steam at the moment.

Black Myth: Wukong is also available today on PS5 so the player count could be much higher, if it proved to be a big seller on Sony’s console as much as it did on Steam. Game Science will likely provide sales figures in the coming weeks so we can get a clearer picture of Black Myth‘s overall success. It’s safe to say that the new Soulslike game is another surprise hit in a year full of unexpected successes like Palworld and Helldivers 2.
