Black Myth: Wukong, the upcoming action-RPG from Chinese indie developer Game Science, finally has a release window. The studio confirmed in a recent short film celebrating the Lunar New Year that the anticipated game will launch in summer 2024, though no other platforms were mentioned other than PC.
The short film released by Game Science celebrates the Chinese Lunar New Year while also letting players know that they’ll be able to enjoy Black Myth: Wukong sometime in summer 2024. While the developer previously stated that it was targeting a release on PC and consoles (likely PS5 and Xbox Series X/S), only a PC version was mentioned in the new video. We’ll probably get an update on that in the near future.
Black Myth: Wukong was originally aiming for a 2023 release but it seems like it may need additional time in development. Reports surfaced last year that claimed the state of the game’s development wasn’t great. A lead combat and character designer left the studio in 2021 due to creative differences, but was later believed to have been inexperienced for the job.
Another source in the same report claimed that the various extensive gameplay videos that we’ve seen of Black Myth: Wukong were heavily scripted. In fact, as of last year, only a very small portion of the game was actually in a playable state. It makes sense that Game Science would set a release date so far out as these problems will likely take some time to correct. With added development time, hopefully we get the action-RPG that was promised in the trailers.
Despite these reports, both the Chinese market and Western market are very excited for the game’s release. The studio received investments from large companies including the likes of Tencent, so it’s by no means a small undertaking. We hope this translates to a great game at launch, but we won’t be able to play it anytime this year.
