Black Myth: Wukong recently launched to record-breaking numbers on PC but its console availability is currently limited to PS5 only. According to new statements made by a Microsoft spokesperson regarding the Xbox version of the game, it sounds like there’s a chance it might not be coming to Xbox anytime soon.
Forbes writer Paul Tassi pressed Microsoft about the status of Black Myth: Wukong‘s Xbox port, which developer Game Science has been strangely quiet about for months. According to a response from a Microsoft spokesperson, the company “can’t comment on the deals made by our partners with other platform holders.”
For comparison, when Baldur’s Gate 3 released on PS5 first, developer Larian Studios was quite vocal about the progress of its Xbox Series X/S versions. Those Xbox ports would arrive at a later date. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said about Black Myth: Wukong developer Game Science who have been quiet about the Xbox version for several months at this point. Fans fear that making an Xbox version is simply not a top priority for Game Science as it was for Larian Studios. There might be an explanation for that.
“If you don’t count mobile, PC is the main platform in China, and consoles make up less than 3% of all revenue,” said Reddit user Kaizerx20, explaining the current situation. “Considering the fact that the player count on Steam drops by 90% when China goes to bed, an Xbox release is not a priority since it basically doesn’t exist in China (or East Asia in general).”
Earlier this week, Black Myth: Wukong skyrocketed to the top of Steam’s charts for concurrent players, reaching peaks at over 2 million players (at the time of writing, that peak was at 1.4 million players which increased by the hour). This can be explained by the extensive marketing of the game in China, which undoubtedly helped the game reach its record-breaking numbers. Since Black Myth is based on the Chinese mythology of Journey to the West, it’s no surprise that China would be the dominent market.
