Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 officially launched last week and ended up becoming the biggest release in the franchise’s history. More specifically, it set the record for most day one players, no doubt owed to its simultaneous launch on Xbox Game Pass which might’ve significantly boosted its player numbers. Microsoft also says that unit sales for the title were up on Steam and PlayStation by 60% year-over-year.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 had a lengthy development period of four years – the first series entry in a long time to receive a modest development time frame. Studios Treyarch and Raven Software seemed to use this extra dev time wisely as the game’s 8-hour campaign was praised online along with its fun multiplayer. All of the work has seemingly paid off as the game is currently enjoying the biggest launch in the franchise’s history.
Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, said in a recent first quarter earnings call:
“Last week’s launch of Black Ops 6 was the biggest Call of Duty release ever, setting a record for day one players, as well as Game Pass subscriber adds on launch day. Unit sales on PlayStation and Steam were also up over 60 percent year-over-year.”
Matt Cox, senior vice president and general manager of Call of Duty, added in a statement:
“Thank you to our players around the world for making Black Ops 6 the biggest Call of Duty launch ever. Our goal from the start has been to bring this great game to as many players as possible wherever they are, however they play. Black Ops 6 is an amazing game, and the response from the Call of Duty community has been incredible. This is only the beginning. Nuketown is only days away and Season 1 is right around the corner. We’re just getting started.”
Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
