Maybe I just overslept and missed the last two days, but I didn’t really care about watching The Oscars because it feels like my favourite type of film, anything based on superheroes or comic books in general, never wins. Well, The Oscars this year surprised, as the 91st Academy Awards had not one, but two superhero films in the spotlight. Black Panther absolutely crushed it at The Oscars, walking away with three awards, while Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse swung in and nabbed one as well.

This year’s Oscars really stood out then, as we all love the Marvel films, but they’ve never won an Oscar before. Marvel films have been nominated for 10 Oscars in total over the past 10 years of the MCU and not one of them won, until recently. Black Panther picked up Oscars for Best Costume Design, Best Original Music Score and Best Production Design. Although the film didn’t win Best Picture, it was nominated for that as well.
When accepting the award for Best Costume Design, Ruth E. Carter said that:
Marvel may have created the first black superhero, but through costume design, we turned him into an African king.
Then comes Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, which won Best Animated Feature and gave Sony Picture’s Animations their first Oscar. Spidey beat Disney’s Incredible’s 2, Ralph Breaks the Internet and more to take home the award. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was an absolutely incredible film and for those who want to know more about it, you should definitely read our review.
Don’t get me wrong here, it is amazing to see superhero films win Oscars as they are my favourite types of films. However, there have been better Marvel films than Black Panther, in my opinion. For example, Civil War, Thor: Ragnarok and more. Therefore, Black Panther winning three Oscars and being nominated for Best Picture was a bit surprising to me personally.
