Earlier this month, during Disney’s D23 Event, Marvel hosted a pretty crazy gaming showcase talking about and sharing information on many upcoming Marvel games. However, two game announcements fans were waiting for never came, Marvel’s Iron Man and Marvel’s Black Panther, and the internet rumour mill surrounding both games hasn’t let up since.
As of today, fans can rest easy now that Marvel’s Iron Man, originally rumoured to be revealed during the D23 event, has officially been announced, which just leaves the unannounced Black Panther game. To clarify, the Black Panther title many are anticipating is said to be a standalone game, unlike the ensemble game Marvel announced during the Disney event.
MORE BLACK PANTHER – Black Panther Open-World, Single-Player Game in Development at EA Games
According to two industry insiders, Jeff Grubb of Giant Bomb and Nibel, these Black Panther rumours floating around might actually have some meat to them. Grubb previously stated:
“This is the other game I was talking about when we went over the Black Panther stuff. You shouldn’t have to wait much longer to hear about it, but you will have to wait to play it. Although it’s coming before Black Panther.”
The official blog post for the announcement mentions Iron Man is just the first of “several new games”:
“The game is currently in the pre-production phase and we’ll have more updates as we get further along in development. This is an exciting new collaboration between Marvel and Electronic Arts, with Iron Man being the first of several new games. Motive is actively growing their team and you can check out open positions on their website if you’re interested in helping them craft the ultimate Iron Man video game adventure.”
Based on a series of Tweets made by Jeff Grubb directly after the D23 event, Iron Man was in the works at EA, and fans wouldn’t have to wait much longer for the game to be announced. Which it now has. Jeff also spoke about Black Panther in his Tweets, saying that the much-anticipated Black Panther game would release after Iron Man and that the group of developers who previously worked on Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor would be working on it.
What’s your take on all of this? Is a standalone Black Panther game waiting for us, or will we have to be happy with the previously announced Captain America and Black Panther title?
