Black Panther Open-World, Single-Player Game in Development at EA Games

Black Panther might be getting a new movie release later this year but it seems that game devs also want in on the action. The series, which was recently showcased at San Diego Comic-Con is now getting its own single-player open-world game too. According to a new report from Jeff Grubb, EA Games has taken the mantle on the new game and it will act as a sort of origin story for the character.

According to the report, the EA Games Black Panther title takes place after the previous Black Panther died. Players will take on the challenge of becoming the new Black Panther hero and undergo the trials and drama that go into forming the hero of Wakanda.

EA Games is currently developing the project under the codename Project Ranier. The report claims that the game is in development at EA Games’ Seattle studio which was founded by former Monolith Productions VP and studio head Kevin Stephens. Kevin oversaw multiple projects while at Monolith Studios including Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and its sequel, Shadow of War.

The Black Panther game is still in very early development at EA Games. There’s also a lot of information that isn’t clear at this point. While the Marvel Cinematic Universe brought Black Panther to life through the recently-passed Chadwick Boseman who took over as the Black Panther after his father, King T’Chaka passed away, it is unclear how another Black Panther will tie into the Marvel comics. The report claims that the game will follow an original character who is created by the player.

It is still too early to tell what the plan is for this Black Panther game. At the rate we are going, EA Games might not even release it. Some games make it into development and never see the light of day. This is especially true for superhero games which have the knack for being worked on and dropped just a few years into development.
